Building Construction Maintenance Program
May 9, 2014
On Tuesday May 6th, North End Youth went for a ride along to learn about the Building Construction Maintenance Program (BCMP), with Employment Liaison, Todd Mackay. BCMP is a program that facilitates the training and employment of 70 workers on Manitoba Housing projects. A large portion of the workers are Aboriginal and are from the North End.
In addition to the work related training, some employees are provided with coucilling in life skills, and as well, is provided some asisstance with housing and day-to-day life activities. Some of the partcipants are new to the country, while others are those who are going through some life changes and require assistance getting things back on track. Regardless the situation, BCMP is structured to guide employees through this 4-5 year program so that they will one day, be able to get their red seal, or trades certification.
During our tour we visited 3 sites:
- Trades Central
- Cabinet, tools and paint shop
- New Mb Housing renovation site
- Previous private side-by-side residences in renovation to Mb Housing suites
- Make-ready suites
- Previous Mb Housing suites cleaned up and refreshed for new occupants
All 3 sites had friendly workers of different skill levels and experiences in the trades. Check out some of our pictures from the tour! We will have more pictures added next week! Email us at firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any questions about BCMP.
